The day got off to a rocky start and continued down that rocky path for many companies using Slack, which reported a “partial outage” beginning around 9:30 a.m EST on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Primarily affected was Slack’s messaging and chat feature, which was not loading for a portion of users. Although notably, the feature has remained fully operational for some so it’s fair to surmise that this inconsistency in the outage contributed a fair amount of confusion to the equation.
Other affected functions impacted in the Slack outage included posts, calls and notifications. Some couldn’t even load the platform, adding to the frustrations experienced by countless users.
It wasn’t until 2:24 p.m EST that Slack reported a full resolution to the outage:
We’ve resolved the issue, and all impacted customers should now be able to access Slack. You may need to reload Slack (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R) to see the fix on your end. If that doesn’t work, try clearing cache (Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and Restart from the app menu). Thanks for bearing with us and we apologize for the disruption to your work day!
Underscoring the Importance of Reliable Enterprise Software
Outages are nothing new for Slack, which has experienced a handful over the last couple years. But these prior outages were typically quite brief. But in today’s lightning-paced business world, mere moments of downtime can translate into significant dips in productivity and financial losses.
Incidents such as today’s Slack outage may prompt company leaders to reconsider their enterprise messaging tools and the other mission-critical software that’s used in the daily course of business operations. Fortunately, there are many benefits associated with a custom enterprise platform, which translates into a healthy ROI for many companies who opt to invest in this technology.
When opting for a custom enterprise messaging platform (or any other enterprise software platform, for that matter), there’s an added sense of control when it comes to downtime and outages. The business has the ability to control when it performs scheduled maintenance and in the rare event an unexpected outage does occur, business leaders will have far more insight and control over the fix.
There’s also something to be said of the ability to communicate directly with the technicians who will be performing the repairs. If desired, you can be involved in strategizing a temporary patch, a permanent solution and you’ll have the ability to stay informed of what’s happening every step of the way. This involvement and insight into the repair process allows businesses to plan accordingly, thereby minimizing the disruption and downtime to operations. You simply cannot say this when using a large, publicly-available platform such as Slack.
According to Down Detector, several other major platforms reported issues today including Peloton and GitHub. A spike was also reported for Amazon Web Services (AWS), but an AWS spokesperson told The New York Post that the data was “inaccurate” and the cloud platform was operating normally.
